Walking the Raad ny Foillan: A Complete Guide to the Isle of Man's Coastal Path

Isle of Man coastal path

The Raad ny Foillan โ€” the Way of the Gull โ€” is 100 miles of coastal footpath encircling the entire Isle of Man. It is, without exaggeration, one of the finest long-distance walks in the British Isles, and it's right on your doorstep.

The route was officially opened in 1986 and follows the coastline from Douglas, heading south through Port Soderick, round the Calf of Man sound, up the west coast through Peel, along the northern plain past the Point of Ayre, and down through Ramsey and Laxey back to Douglas.

The Sections

Most walkers break the route into sections, tackling it over multiple day walks rather than attempting it in one push (though hardy souls do complete it in 3-5 days).

Douglas to Port Erin (25 miles): The southern section, passing through Port Soderick, Castletown, and along the dramatic coastline of the Sound. The views of the Calf of Man from the cliffs above are unforgettable.

Port Erin to Peel (20 miles): The wild west coast. Fewer settlements, bigger cliffs, more exposed conditions. The stretch around Niarbyl is spectacular โ€” ancient rock formations plunging into the sea.

Peel to the Point of Ayre (25 miles): The character changes completely. From the drama of Peel Castle, the path follows the flat northern plain โ€” sandy beaches, the Ayres nature reserve, and the lighthouse at the island's northernmost tip.

Point of Ayre to Douglas via Ramsey and Laxey (30 miles): The east coast return, passing through Ramsey, along the cliffs above Maughold Head (with its ancient Celtic crosses), through the mining heritage of Laxey, and the final stretch along the Marine Drive back into Douglas.

Practical Tips

The path is generally well-signed with the gull waymarker. Underfoot conditions vary hugely โ€” clifftop grass, muddy farm tracks, sandy beaches, and road sections through towns. Decent waterproof boots are non-negotiable. Manx weather is Manx weather.

Bus Vannin serves most points along the route, making it easy to plan linear walks with a bus return. The 1, 2, and 3 routes cover the east, south, and west coasts respectively.

There's no formal accommodation booking service for the route, but B&Bs and guest houses in each coastal town are generally walker-friendly. Book ahead in summer and during TT.

Why Bother

Because you live on an island with 100 miles of coastal path and if you haven't walked at least some of it, you're missing the best thing about living here. The light over the Irish Sea on a clear evening. The seals at the Sound. The way Peel Castle looks from the coastal path at sunset. This is the Isle of Man at its finest โ€” no ticket required, no queue, no admission fee.

Pick a section. Pick a weekend. Go.
