Uzi submachine guns and ninja star handed over during police amnesty
The Isle of Man Constabulary has reported a significant outcome from its recent weapons amnesty, with over 230 items surrendered to the police. Among the haul were two Uzi submachine guns and a ninja star, highlighting the types of weapons that residents chose to hand in during the initiative.
During the amnesty period, which ran from January 13 to February 2, officers collected a total of 150 firearms. This collection included a deactivated AK47, a double-barrelled shotgun, various air rifles, pistols, and crossbows. Additionally, the police received 84 bladed items, encompassing swords, daggers, and a notable Rambo knife, as well as over 500 rounds of ammunition.
The figures indicate a marked increase in the number of weapons surrendered compared to previous amnesty events. In 2023, for instance, 112 firearms and 73 knives were handed in, underscoring the growing community engagement in promoting safety and responsible weapon ownership.
The amnesty is designed to provide a safe and non-punitive environment for individuals to dispose of unlicensed or unwanted firearms and weapons. Inspector Elliot Butler, who leads the Tactical Firearms Unit, emphasized the Constabulary's commitment to ensuring public safety. He noted that while the Isle of Man is ranked as the third safest place to live globally, it is still susceptible to serious crime. The initiative aims to reduce the risks associated with illegal weapons and enhance community security.
As the Constabulary continues its efforts to combat serious and organized crime, the results of this amnesty reflect a proactive approach by the community in maintaining the Isle of Man's reputation as a safe place to live.
